Despite advances in the economy and infrastructure in India, gender inequality remains prevalent. Surveys show that only 27% of Indian women are in the labour force which is the second lowest in South Asia! Many young women are forced into marriage or made to work at home. This leaves them without an income of their own and a lack of confidence in their abilities.
The Anant Foundation for Innovation and Social Inclusion (AFISI), an organisation primarily focused on social innovations to ensure inclusive growth, is collaborating with Action Aid - an international non-governmental organization whose primary aim is to work against poverty and injustice worldwide to tackle this issue. Their model is similar to that of NGOs such as Ripples Africa which helps women in rural areas start sustainable businesses and The Pratthanadee Foundation in Thailand which provides women with career and personal development training.
AFISI is working to implement a unique skill development program to help 500 young women obtain jobs as beauticians and tailors. The girls are provided with two months of extensive training and are then given the opportunity to work at a beauty parlor set up by the foundation in Asola or a tailoring center in Vasant Kunj.
After successful completion of phase 1 which consisted of a two months training program we are now focusing on phase 2 "
AFISI is hoping to raise a total of Rs. 75,000 to cover the costs for sustaining both businesses. Rent for the spaces costs them roughly Rs.12,000 and consumable supplies needed to run the salon and tailoring center such as cloth, soaps, or brushes, and other operational expenses come to around Rs. 25,500 for each enterprise.
"The funds being raised will be used for rentals, marketing and procurement of consumables. The basic infrastructure and the equipment has already been setup."
Your contribution can help them ensure that these young women have their own careers that provide them with an independent source of income and self-esteem. With your support, they will no longer need to depend on their families for everything and can be self sufficient. Help reduce gender inequality in our country!
